small friends' chronicles
Introducing Mary-Anna Musk Ox I used to think that Mary-Anna Musk Ox lived 250 miles north of Anchorage, however, my friend Carl Johnson, a gifted Alaska-based photographer, suggests that she might live more like 850 miles north of the city. He should know.Mary-Anna comes to Anchorage one weekend every summer, when her favorite salon closes for its Mary-Anna Marathon Weekend, when the staff does her cut, color, and perm. When this 690-pound Bovidae Caprina Ovibos came to my studio for a portrait, I welcomed her. She liked the green embroidered quilt, demanded to be painted in front of it, and took it with her when she left. She understands and relishes the irony of being a 690-pound "small friend." Read more of her story at Mary-Anna Musk Ox, A new small friend, Mary-Anna Musk Ox (A new small friend): Portrait in Progress, and Mary-Anna Musk Ox: Portrait Complete.
