small friends' chronicles

Introducing Fred From Chicago

Forgeries and small friends

Forgeries and mis-identification are issues that trouble museum curators around the world. Sadly, no attention has been paid to the effect of such misidentification on small friends who have landed in museums through no fault of their own.

Fred From Chicago

Fred, mistakenly catalogued as a 19th century headdress from Mali, spent decades in the splendid and hospitable Art Institute of Chicago until he encountered a particularly enthusiastic taxonomist who was about to reclassify him. To do so, he would have undertaken what Fred decided was too much poking and prodding, distracting him from pleasant naps and discussions with friends in other display cases. Demonstrating that he was much more than a headdress, Fred walked out of the museum, crossing Michigan Avenue to find a latte. He has not been seen since October 14, 2008.

Origins

Fred was painted on a very small piece of Arches 300# paper.
